Doris Day has died aged 97

We remember the life of the silver screen icon below.

One of Hollywood's last Golden Age stars has passed away. Playing Jo McKenna, one-half of an American couple whose vacation turns tragic after their child, Hank, is taken, she and her husband (Stewart) must follow various clues to find him, ultimately realizing he's being held at an embassy. The same year, she received a lifetime achievement honor from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

Doris fell in love with dance at an early age, and by her teenage years had formed a duo with Jerry Doherty - but her career plans soon changed following a vehicle accident in 1937. Day said in a statement on April 2, 2017.

As Day's longtime friend and costar in With Six You Get Egg Roll (1968), actress Jackie Joseph, tells PEOPLE, "She had worked since she was a teenager".

On film, Day appeared in many popular musicals and "bedroom comedies", including Romance on the High Seas, I'll See You in My Dreams, Calamity Jane, Love Me or Leave Me, and Pillow Talk for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. She could convey great, moody wistfulness, too.

Throughout her career, Day also became known as a gay icon for a variety of reasons, and her films hold a special place within the hearts of many LGBT+ fans. Day later starred opposite Clark Gable in 1958 comedy Teacher's Pet. She married four times, was divorced three times and widowed once, suffered a nervous breakdown and had severe financial trouble after one husband squandered her money. Her singing voice was all that and more.

Born Mary Ann Von Kappelhoff on April 3, 1922 in Cincinnati, Ohio, she began her career at the young age of 15, and worked for almost three decades in film, largely starring in musical-comedies.

Nadal beaten by Tsitsipas in Madrid
Djokovic said he was likely facing an opponent lacking a few physical reserves after a long semi-final struggle with Nadal . Nadal hit his stride after a steady start and broke to lead at 3-1 when Tiafoe was caught out at the net.

Day wasn't done with the entertainment world yet though.

Day was also known for her popular TV program, The Doris Day Show, which premiered in 1968 and ran until 1973.

The Doris Day Animal Foundation confirmed the star had died at her Carmel Valley, California, home surrounded by close friends.

With movies trending toward more explicit sex, she turned to television to recoup her finances. "May she rest peacefully".

You couldn't ask for a more ideal portrait of life as a celebrity in the 1950s and 1960s.

After her series ended, so did her acting career - she never gave another performance.
