Venezuela Takes Actions against People Involved in Attempted Coup

Although the group shares the opposition's goal for a free and fair election in Venezuela as soon as possible, it considers the government of Nicolás Maduro a necessary stakeholder to achieve a peaceful transition. While Washington is supporting the opposition and threatening to use "any options" to oust Maduro and restore democracy in the country - eventually including military intervention - Russian Federation backs Maduro's regime emphasizing the respect of the principles of sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs.

As part of the lawsuits filed by relevant authorities, a Venezuelan court with jurisdiction in terrorism cases on Friday ordered that the lawmaker from the National Assembly (Parliament) in contempt, Edgar Zambrano, be deprived of his freedom for flagrant participation in the coup.

Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino separately said that a US Coast Guard ship had entered Venezuelan territorial waters, which he said "we will not accept".

Last week, Leopoldo Lopez - Guaido's political mentor - moved into Spain's diplomatic residence after escaping house arrest to appear alongside Guaido during his call for the military to rise up.

In January, Juan Guaido invoked the OPEC nation's constitution to assume an interim presidency, arguing President Nicolas Maduro's 2018 re-election was illegitimate.

The U.S. government's Venezuelan embassy, now based in Washington, said Zambrano's "arbitrary detention" was 'illegal and inexcusable'.

It was not yet clear if Zambrano was already at the Helicoide.

The crackdown came after they joined opposition leader Juan Guaido in rallies last month to spur a military uprising against socialist President Nicolas Maduro.

On Tuesday, Venezuela's pro-Maduro Constituent Assembly ruled to strip Mr Zambrano and six other opposition politicians of their parliamentary immunity to allow their future prosecution. The United States government this week threatened to sanction all its members.

Mr Guaido invoked the constitution to assume an interim presidency in January, denouncing Mr Maduro's rule as illegitimate after he secured re-election past year in a vote widely viewed as fraudulent.
