See 265,000 galaxies in the epic Hubble Legacy Field mosaic

Numerous galaxies represented in the mosaic expand to some 500 million years after the Big Bang when Universe was in its infancy and planets were just commencing to form.

The Hubble Legacy Field (HLF) mosaic image combines observations from 16 years' worth of Hubble Space Telescope deep-field surveys, including the eXtreme Deep Field (XDF) survey, which offers the most far-reaching view of the universe.

Galaxies trace the expansion of the universe, offering clues to the underlying physics of the cosmos, showing when the chemical elements originated and enabled the conditions that eventually led to the appearance of our solar system and life.

"Now that we have gone wider than in previous surveys, we are harvesting many more distant galaxies in the largest such dataset ever produced", said Garth Illingworth, of the University of California at Santa Cruz and leader of the team effort to assemble the image. The team is now working on a second set of images that total more than 5,200 additional Hubble exposures.

Astronomers have assembled a mosaic of almost 7,500 images taken of the distant universe, creating the largest and most comprehensive "history book" of galaxies ever made. The result is breathtaking: even more so when you consider that each of those lights is potentially a galaxy, which, like the Milky Way, could contain 100 billion stars. or more.

The out-of-this-world gorgeous NGC 2903 is located about 30 million light-years away in the constellation of Leo (the Lion), and was studied as part of a Hubble survey of the central regions of roughly 145 nearby disk galaxies.

'No image will surpass this one until future space telescopes are launched'. The mosaic of images seen here document 16 years of observations for the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.

The Hubble telescope has captured a dazzling new photograph of a spiral galaxy, NGC 2903.

"Such exquisite high-resolution measurements of the numerous galaxies in this catalog enable a wide swath of extragalactic study", said Dr. Katherine Whitaker, an astronomer at the University of CT, in Storrs. A quarter of a century the camera held 1.2 million targeted observations over 38 thousands of space objects, based on which it has trained about 13 thousand scientific papers.

The Hubble observes ultraviolet wavelengths, which the atmosphere filters out, and it collects visible light. Hubble's surveys of disc galaxies aim to explore the relationship between these black holes and their local galaxies.

The James Webb Space Telescope, which will give astronomers an even deeper look into the legacy field, is expected to launch in 2021.
