Measles Spread Expands In US, 71 New Cases Reported


There have been 695 measles cases in 22 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

That's slightly less than the 667 cases reported in all of 2014.

Resurgence of the once-eradicated, highly-contagious disease is linked to the growing anti-vaccine movement in richer nations, which the World Health Organisation (WHO) has identified as a major global health threat.

Symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes, tiny white spots in the mouth and a red rash on the face that spreads to the extremities.

The Illinois Department of Public Health says it's also expanding outreach in communities with low vaccination rates and educating the public on the importance of vaccines.

The DPH posting said the initial child with measles was unvaccinated and acquired measles on a visit to Israel. Dianne Feinstein said Tuesday that Los Angeles County now has more reports of measles cases. The WHO said "vaccine hesitancy", the "reluctance or refusal to vaccinate despite the availability of vaccines", is one of 10 threats to global health in 2019. They added that the cases aren't related to four earlier cases in people who traveled through LA County earlier this year and that most of the patients were unvaccinated.

"Please get your children vaccinated", he said.

Of those 626 cases, 487 were in people 19 and younger.

The CDC warned that the longer these outbreaks continue, the greater the chance measles will again gain a sustained foothold in the country.
