The number of confirmed cases of measles in the United States this year jumped by almost 20 percent in the week ended April 11 in the country's second-worst outbreak in almost two decades, federal health officials reported on Monday.
Those born before 1957 or who previously had measles or had two measles vaccine shots are considered immune because of the vaccine's high rate of effectiveness.
According to the data, in 2019 so far, 170 countries have reported 112 163 measles cases - while after three months in 2018, only 28 124 cases had been reported, in 163 countries - nearly a 300% increase.
In the overseas department of Mayotte, there has been 21 measles cases year-to-date.
"Spikes in case numbers have also occurred in countries with high overall vaccination coverage, including the United States". As the Post reported, the largest epidemic occurred in 2014 when "the United States reported a record 667 cases, including one large outbreak primarily among unvaccinated Amish communities in OH that accounted for more than half of the cases".
They were infected by visitors from Israel, where a measles outbreak began a year ago.

Venezuela, where the disease was once contained, has also seen tens of thousands of cases as the country's economic and political crises continue to push the healthcare system to the brink of collapse.
