Bernie Sanders to release tax returns by Monday


Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Gov. Jay Inslee of Washington, have already released their 2018 tax returns.

Sanders left the big question - how to pay for his proposal - largely unanswered, although he did provide a list of suggestions, including a 4% tax on employees (exempting the first $29,000 in income for a family of four), a 7.5% tax on employers (exempting the first $2 million in payroll) and a new tax on "extreme wealth".

"Together we are going to end the worldwide embarrassment of the United States of America, our great country, being the only major nation on Earth not to guarantee health care to all as a right", he said.

While Sanders' proposal has energized many, it's also generated concern among others over how much it would cost to maintain.

Sanders' office released a paper outlining options to pay for his last version of Medicare for All, estimated to cost upward of $1 trillion per year, although none of those options was included in the legislation.

Sanders has faced criticism on the campaign trail for failing to release his past tax returns in full, and has increasingly been compared to President Donald Trump, who has conspicuously broken with executive convention by failing to release his own taxes.

Sanders' proposal differs a bit from the Obama-era ACA, which has received steady criticisms since it was enacted almost a decade ago.

At least 10 other Democrats vying for the right to challenge Republican President Donald Trump in 2020 have backed some similar form of government-run healthcare, and every Democrat supports taking at least smaller steps toward achieving universal coverage. Proponents argue it could deliver better health care to all Americans while avoiding political, budgetary and legal objections.
