Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey now says he would support closing the border


Closing the US-Mexican border would "not be good for anyone", Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez warned Wednesday, as his American counterpart, Donald Trump, kept up his threats to do just that.

President Trump is threatening to close down the border in a bid to stop illegal immigration.

On Monday night, Nielsen rushed home from Europe, where she was attending G7 security meetings, to oversee the response to what administration officials are calling a dire emergency at the southern border.

He also has turned his ire on Congress, which he said must change the policies that allow illegal immigrants to game the US system and ensure it takes years to try to deport them. "But to me the most important job I have is the security of our country, even more important than those other things I talk about", he added.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen intends to fly to the border mid-week to assess the impact of several changes the administration has recently implemented, including efforts to return more asylum seekers to Mexico as they wait out their case.

"Any action that stops commerce at the border would be harmful to the U.S. economy, and in particular, the auto industry".

Homeland Security officials said they were preparing for the possibility of a shutdown of at least some border entry points as they divert staff to deal with the flood of migrants from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, expected to hit almost 100,000 a month.

"This is already the highest price we have at this time of year", said David Magana, a vice president and senior analyst at Rabobank. "Once they get in-because as you know we can't hold families for 20 days-they send the child back, and bring the child back with another family, another fake family".

Late Tuesday, Trump economic adviser Larry Kudlow said the administration was considering ways to limit damage, telling CNBC one idea might be to find ways to allow freight across the border to "ameliorate the breakdown in supply chains".

But Ptak reiterated that the governor does not want to see the border shut down.

"Democrats are leaving us absolutely no choice at this point", Mrs. Sanders said.
