What next? MPs reject all Brexit options in night of votes

This is not the first time Cooper or her conspirators tried to stop a proper, no deal Brexit, with Cooper, Letwin, and former Conservative MP Nick Boles threatening a government shutdown by presenting amendments to a finance bill which meant to stop the Treasury spending money on no deal arrangements.

The EU could not become "the hostage to the solution to a political crisis in the UK", said the French president.

And cabinet secretary Mark Sedwill, the head of the civil service, warned in a letter that was leaked to the Daily Mail that there would be dire consequences if the United Kingdom crashed out without a deal on 12 April.

Politicians on either side of the House of Commons were scrambling to avert a no-deal Brexit on Tuesday, as Theresa May's cabinet remained locked in discussions and the European Union warned that it was becoming increasingly likely that the United Kingdom would crash out of the bloc.

Liz Truss, Conservative MP for South West Norfolk, who has been tipped to take over from Theresa May, said it was now time to back the prime minister's deal.

But he said he would await the prime minister returning and would support her again.

"During any long extension, there will be no renegotiation of the Brexit withdrawal agreement, no, never", Barnier told an audience at the European Policy Centre event.

Tomorrow the Commons could push through legislation to force Mrs May to delay Brexit, taking no deal off the table.

Britain could still accept the deal negotiated by May, which Barnier said was "the only way" for Britain to leave the bloc in an orderly way.

Last week this option proved much more popular than the government's withdrawal deal with the European Union, just six votes short of a majority. Indicative votes could then take place.

This proposes the United Kingdom government negotiates as a minimum "a permanent and comprehensive UK-wide customs union with the EU" as part of any Brexit deal. However the trade deals secured by Liam Fox over the past two years would suggest otherwise.

Despite the difficulties of a chaotic exit, "the European Union will be able to manage", Barnier said, although he warned that "not everything will be smooth".

This proposes that any Brexit deal passed by parliament should be put before the public, so the people can have the final say on it.
