Shooting at New Zealand mosque, casualties feared

New Zealand's Police commissioner, Mike Bush, was quoted by Reuters as saying that multiple fatalities occurred at two mosques, where at least one gunman had opened fire on worshippers.

Police officials did not immediately comment on whether the incident took place in the mosque or nearby.

The team is in Christchurch to play New Zealand in the third cricket test starting tomorrow.

Christchurch Hospital has urged people to avoid the area unless they are seriously injured.

He said there was an anti-Islamic motivation to the attack but it was anti-immigration, anti-ethnic replacement and anti-cultural replacement in origin.

The bomb is located inside a beige Subaru that crashed almost three kilometres from the Al Noor Mosque where the shooting took place.

"Many of those who will have been directly affected by this shooting may be migrants to New Zealand, they may even be refugees here", she said.

They say one person has been taken into custody.

He said some managed to escape through windows and doors but "many people had been hit, some as young as 16".

A second shooting has also occurred at another mosque in the suburb of Linwood, while a suspicious device, thought to be a bomb, has reportedly been found in a vehicle on Strickland Avenue.

He saw two injured people carried on stretchers past his shop.

Eyewitnesses have told how a gunman has opened fire at a mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand, with unconfirmed reports of dozens of casualties.

The man claiming to be the shooter identified themselves as Brenton Tarrant - a white, 28-year-old Australian-born man.
