Facebook resumes service after going down globally

Social media sites Facebook and Instagram are still down, at least six hours after users around the world reported an outage. Many people went on Twitter to vent their frustration.

Facebook on Wednesday evening said it is aware that some people are having trouble accessing its 'family of applications. Many users were having issues posting to their feeds and were seeing a message that said the app would auto-post their photos once it was possible.

Facebook and Instagram has gone down worldwide, and no one really knows why.

Facebook and associated apps and services like Instagram and Facebook Messenger seem to be experiencing issues and error codes preventing login.

As Facebook's outages dragged on, Twitter lit up with complaints and comments - and, of course, memes and jokes.

The outages appeared to be concentrated in the Americas and Europe.

Millions of Facebook and Instagram users have been forced to vent their frustration via Twitter after the social media networks experienced an unexplained outage across the U.S. and Europe.

About an hour later, it said the outage "is not related to a DDoS attack". Some Facebook users created new profiles on the network to keep abreast, while others logged into accounts that are generally dormant.

Users in the United Kingdom have been worse affected in London, according to website DownDetector.

The reports first surfaced in the early morning (AEDT) and all three services continue to be causing headaches for users.

While there isn't enough information available at the moment, people are coming up with a lot of possible stories, including a DDoS attack.

According to Facebook's status page, the outages started around 11 a.m. EDT on Wednesday.
