Israeli police said the entrances to Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque compound will be reopened on Wednesday morning, a day after they sealed off the gates in response to what they said was a firebombing of a police station on the site. In a statement, he called on the global community to intervene.
Palestinian media reports suggested members of the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf - the custodians of the site - were involved in the confrontations with Israeli polics, in which at least two Palestinians were injured.
The Jerusalem police commander subsequently ordered the Mount closed to allow for searches to be carried out.
"Palestinians have contested the Israeli fire allegation, some stressing that the fire could have been started by the police themselves or their agents to use as a pretext for closing the Muslim compound as part of a plot to force the closing of Bab al-Rahma prayer area, which police has (sic) been trying to do for over three weeks". Police routinely arrest Jews who are seen moving their lips in apparent silent prayer while visiting the compound.
The spot, home to the Al-Aqsa Mosque and gold-topped Dome of the Rock, is a frequent flashpoint of violence. "We will continue to act to restore calm on the [Temple Mount]". Israel has barred several guards and high-ranking officials from the Waqf, the Jordanian religious authority that administers the site, from the compound and arrested dozens of Palestinians under suspicions of inciting violence at the site.

In recent weeks Bab al-Rahmeh and Bab al-Tawbeh have been used by Palestinian Muslims as areas to pray, with prayer carpets laid on the ground. The gate had been closed by Israel in 2003 because it said that a Hamas-linked organization had taken control of the site and was acting against the interests of the Jewish State.
Also on Tuesday night, in a separate incident, a Palestinian man was fatally shot by Israeli forces during clashes in the West Bank town of Salfit near Ramallah.
