Boeing Has Grounded All Boeing 737 Max Planes Worldwide Over Safety Fears

It comes after two fatal accidents overseas involving the aircraft.

An Ethiopian Airlines flight crashed Sunday, shortly after taking off from Addis Ababa.

Earlier Tuesday, Canada banned the new Boeing 737-Max 8 aircraft, which has crashed twice in fewer than five months, killing almost 350 people. The airport says from six to 10 of the Max 8 planes fly from Tampa each day. Fiji Airways is the only other operator that will be affected by CASA's temporary suspension.

Passenger Mort Greenberg was waiting at the gate in Miami on American Airlines Flight 2809 when the news broke that the government was grounding all Boeing Max 8 planes.

A focus there is the role of a software system created to push the plane down to prevent a stall during flight, alongside airline training and fix standards. "We didn't really have any problem with it", Rochelle Androwski said.

The investigation may focus on an automated anti-stall system that dips the nose down.

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine on Wednesday brushed aside concerns about the safety of the Boeing 737 Max 8, telling a Senate committee that consumers are free to change their flights if they are anxious about flying aboard the aircraft. That's because there isn't yet clear-cut evidence that the Indonesia and Ethiopia crashes were related. And if they did, why didn't it work?

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday spoke on the phone with his Ethiopian counterpart as part of a diplomatic effort to secure Israeli rescue workers access to the site of a plane crash, where they hope to locate the bodies of the two Israeli victims who were on board.

Transport Minister Marc Garneau said a comparison of vertical fluctuations found a "similar profile" for the Ethiopian Airlines flight and the Lion Air crash in Indonesia.

Garneau said the Ethiopian Airlines plane's automatic system similarly kicked in and forced the jet's nose down after determining that it was too high after takeoff. The Boeing executive reassured Trump the aircraft is safe, company and White House officials confirmed.

Problems with the new jets could have longer term ramifications for Southwest and Boeing.

Southwest and American Airlines are still flying the Boeing 737 Max 8.

"It would have been nice just to be aware of it, that this was the plane that was actually involved in the crash and that there's a software issue or whatever is wrong with it", he says. Investigators ought to be able to answer the question of whether the similarities in apparent vertical speed and altitude fluctuations of the two flights had similar causes.

British regulators indicated possible trouble with a reportedly damaged flight data recorder. The biggest impact could be on future deliveries given Boeing has almost 5,000 more 737 MAXs on order.

The MCAS introduced in the new model was clearly intended by Boeing to be an enhancement to assure and improve safety. American Airlines has not altered its policy - change fee plus difference in fare - but is reassuring travelers of the safety of its aircraft.

It said the CAD had noted that the U.S. Federation Aviation Administration has affirmed the planes' airworthiness and that investigations were ongoing. If the AOA sensor is faulty, it could create a false signal of a stall-which is what happened in the case of Lion Air Flight 610 and may have been the issue with the Ethiopian Airlines flight.

"It makes me nervous because I am afraid of flying anyway, so I definitely spent last night checking if our flight was affected, but we were lucky".

It was a rare moment when Canadian authorities chose to move without the Americans going first, one expert said, despite protestations from U.S. President Donald Trump that the two sides co-ordinated announcements that came several hours apart.

They do not have the new MCAS and feature tried and true technologies that have been the linchpin of Australia's enviable airline safety record for more than 40 years.
