ESPN's Adam Schefter then reported the Chiefs intend to sign the former Houston Texan to a three-year, $42 million deal.

The 26-year-old is one of several big-time safeties on a free agent market that also features the likes of Landon Collins, Earl Thomas, Lamarcus Joyner, Adrian Amos and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.

After early reports that Mathieu had turned down a $9.5 million per year offer to stay with the Houston Texans and would explore the National Football League free agency market, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Monday night that the Chiefs will sign the star-caliber safety.

The request from the Cardinals to take a cut in pay after the 2017 season caused Mathieu to move on from the team that selected him in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Last season he agreed to a one-year, $7 million contract to play for Houston.

In his lone season with the Texans, Mathieu made 89 tackles, recorded eight passes defensed, sacked the quarterback three times and intercepted two passes.
