Motorola's foldable smartphone is coming, with hints at a RAZR clamshell design

While the Mate X and Galaxy Fold unfurl to become a larger device, Motorola's patent shows a phone that would be folded to become more compact and portable.

Dery also claimed Motorola is investigating different formats for the foldable screen, such as a single screen that can fold twice to reduce chances of scratching the screen.

In related news, Dery did talk about the future beyond this first foldable, saying that the "holy grail" of foldables is going to be one with a dual-fold, sort of like a Z-design.

Despite February having come and gone, Dery promises that the company has "no intention of coming later than everybody else in the market". Two, if the company doesn't want to be last to market, that means we can likely expect it to be released sooner rather than later seeing as how Samsung's Galaxy Fold will be launching on April 26. When asked about the design elements of the phone, Dan expressed that even though Samsung and Huawei's approach with a screen on the outside is "the nicest and the purest" way to go, this tends to make the phone fragile and Motorola plans to do it differently. "When you know the scratching issues you would be facing, you will have something that is very rapidly not usable", said Dery.

It wouldn't mark the first time that Motorola has attempted to resurrect the Razr name.

Instead, Dery says one of the options Motorola has been considering is a device that folds open to reveal the display. But again, the first phone from Moto won't be this "holy grail".

2005: Motorola drops the price of the V3, causing it to sell 50 million units by 2006. It featured a 2mm thinner body and a micro-USB charger that could also be used to connect a headset.

Its successor, the Razr3, was eventually discontinued amid declining sales.

Motorola hasn't unveiled its folding smartphone at Mobile World Congress yet, but there's still time for that to change; the event doesn't end until Friday.

Motorola's Dery didn't confirm any specifics about the Journal's January report in this more recent interview, though his comments seem to suggest that rumor-mongers are on the right track when they're talking about a clamshell-style design.
