Tork's official Facebook page, run by the musician's friends, family and colleagues, confirmed his death in a post Thursday.
The Monkees debuted on NBC in the fall of 1966 and were an immediate success both on TV and on the music charts. Their hits include "Daydream Believer", "Pleasant Valley Sunday" and "Last Train to Clarksville". That was something that infuriated both Tork and Nesmith. But music remained his greatest passion. "I had fantasies of being more important than it turns out I was".
Tork left the group in 1968 amid creative differences but reunited for tours with the others every few years.
