Monkees' Peter Tork Dies at 77

Band member Mickey Dolenz spoke out on Facebook about the news. "Those traits also equipped him well to take on cancer, a condition he met with unwavering humor and courage".

The Monkees were a teen-pop sensation when they burst onto the scene in the 1960s, and viewed as America's answer to The Beatles.

On his Twitter account, Dolenz shared the same sentiment: "There are no words right now...heart broken over the loss of my Monkee brother, Peter Tork". He started playing piano, banjo acoustic bass and bass guitar in his childhood, and joined the folk music scene in the 1960s after moving to NY.

Songwriter Diane Warren wrote: "Oh no RIP Peter Tork".

Tork's official Facebook page, run by the musician's friends, family and colleagues, confirmed his death in a post Thursday.

The Monkees debuted on NBC in the fall of 1966 and were an immediate success both on TV and on the music charts. Their hits include "Daydream Believer", "Pleasant Valley Sunday" and "Last Train to Clarksville". That was something that infuriated both Tork and Nesmith. But music remained his greatest passion. "I had fantasies of being more important than it turns out I was".

Tork left the group in 1968 amid creative differences but reunited for tours with the others every few years.

Creative differences led Tork to leave soon after the group's 1968 movie and album "Head".

His 1994 album "Stranger Things Have Happened" was well received. In the years after, Tork mostly played with his groups Peter Tork Project and Shoe Suede Blues.
