Winning England goalkeeper Gordon Banks has died at 81

It will be remembered as arguably the greatest save of all time and was the result of foresight, hard work and dedication.

John Green of Hallamshire sporting club, who first met Banks in 1996, said:"It is a sad day for Sheffield and for football that one of the boys of '66 who brought the world cup to England has died, but he will never be forgotten".

The contest, viewed at the time as the final which might have been, was edged by Jairzinho's goal on the hour.

In the group stage match in Guadalajara, later regarded as the "real final", Carlos Alberto sent Jairzinho flying down the right flank with a perfectly weighted through-ball. He pushed my header, somehow, up and over.

Upon hearing my request to use the room dedicated to a Stoke City icon, the male receptionist looked in bewilderment, perplexed as to why this particular suite would be of use.

"As soon as I got my hand to it, I thought it was going in the top corner", he said. "Even though I was on the pitch I still don't know how he saved that header from Pele". "We had some great goalkeepers in those days, and the only person I can think came near was Pat Jennings", said Mullery. I hit that header exactly as I had hoped.

Immediately after, Banks recalled, Pele said: "I thought that was a goal".

Thanks for the memories, Gordon.

He was capped 73 times by his country and was an ever-present as Alf Ramsey's team claimed World Cup glory on home soil in 1966.

A post on his official Facebook profile read: "For many people, their memory of Gordon Banks is defined by the save he made against me in 1970".

Pele - who would go on to lift the trophy - admitted later he had said "gol", so sure was he that the ball was heading into the net. And I couldn't believe what I saw.

Mullery said Banks was probably the best goalkeeper he had played with or against. "I played against some great players, and he was the best player I ever played against".
