Mazda reveals striking MX-5 30th Anniversary Edition

Mazda has pulled the covers off its celebration of three decades of the MX-5, or Miata Roadster, in the form of the 2019 Mazda MX-5 30 Anniversary Edition.

Apart from special colors and wheels, MX-5 30th Anniversary Edition will also feature orange Brembo brake calipers up front and matching Nissin brake calipers at the rear.

February in Chicago isn't normally what you'd call convertible season, but on a cold and blustery morning nearly 30 years ago to the day, Mazda took ragtop fans and, indeed, the rest of the auto industry, by surprise with the debut of the original Miata roadster. And to mark the occasion, the company has devised this, the MX-5 30th Anniversary Edition. We regret to inform you that Mazda appears to do these things in five-year increments, having created the 25th Anniversary Miata back in 2014, just 100 of which were allocated to the U.S. The upside, if any, is that you now have five years to save up for the 35th Anniversary Miata due in 2024.

To offset some of the orange, the 17-inch Rays ZE40 wheels are painted a dark gunmetal grey. New Alcantara trim is applied in place of leather to the door panels, the dashboard, and the Recaro seats. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on the 30th Anniversary model.

Like it or nor, and we do, the Mazda MX-5 has become an iconic auto, taking all the best bits of 1960s British Sports cars and delivering a fun and affordable little sports vehicle fit for modern roads. Sales will be limited to 3,000 units worldwide, including both soft-top and retractable hardtop models. Rest of the world would be getting 2.0 liter variant with 181hp. The soft top model starts at $34,995 for the six-speed manual and goes up to $37,995 for an automatic RF. Since then, over one million examples of the MX-5 nameplate have been sold around the world.
