Alternative Fact of the Week: Patrolling El Paso's criminal hellscape

Democrats have proposed spending as much as $1.6 billion for border security including some types of physical barriers, but it remains unclear how much more money they'd accept as part of a deal.

Michael Glassner, CEO of the Trump campaign, said El Paso was the flawless setting for a rally during the president's border wall fight with Congress. Since the spending was the main argument between parties during the shutdown, the Republicans and the Democrats must now work together in a bipartisan conference committee comprised of 17 lawmakers from both the Senate and House of Representatives to negotiate an end result that both the Republicans and Democrats will be happy with, which will prevent the government from shutting down for a second time.

To hear President Donald Trump tell it, El Paso, Texas, was one of the nation's "most unsafe cities" before a border barrier was constructed.

While immigrant groups and some Democrats have criticized ICE's tactics as heavy-handed, Trump has praised the agency's work in protecting the United States from what he calls risky criminals.

Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-TX), who represents El Paso, disagreed with the president. "The fact of the matter is that El Paso and most of the cities on the U.S. -Mexico border boast among the safest crime statistics in the entire country", Jon Barela, chief executive of the Borderplex Alliance, told the Post.

- President Trump on Wednesday said he wants to increase the number of people who legally migrate to the U.S. "We are talking about substance", Shelby said.

A deal struck between Trump and congressional leaders is keeping the government open until February 15, while House and Senate negotiators try to reach a compromise that Trump will sign.

"The border city of El Paso, Texas, used to have extremely high rates of violent crime - one of the highest in the country, and [was] considered one of our nation's most unsafe cities. I feel okay here inside, because I don't know anybody on the outside, anyway". By 2010 after the wall was built, El Paso's murder rate had dropped to 0.9 for every 100,000 residents, compared with a national average of 4.8.

Other elected officials complained Trump's lies are destructive to the city's reputation and economy. Few people dispute that barriers contributed to sharp declines in illegal border crossings in El Paso and other border communities.

El Paso's crime rate fell between 1993 and 2006 by more than 34 percent - but it wasn't because of a wall.

Sheriff Richard Wiles of El Paso County had a very Trump-ian response to the president's attempt at citing his jurisdiction as proof of the efficacy of walls: "Sad".

Take, for example, his claims about human trafficking and border walls.
