Nick Foles to become free agent

The Philadelphia Eagles informed the former Super Bowl MVP they were picking up his option for the 2019 season. They could try to franchise tag him, and then trade Foles for a draft pick.

There has been some specualtion and reporting that the Eagles might decide to place the franchise tag on Foles in an attempt to trade him.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the Eagles are looking for a third-round pick for the 30-year-old. Later, Foles reportedly told Philadelphia he would void that option, which means he must pay the Eagles his $2 million signing bonus from 2018 to opt out.

Foles and his camp technically had five days to volley back but needed just hours as they informed the Birds that Foles would indeed by paying back $2M to the organization to gain a path toward free agency in March, according to National Football League sources.

Foles is expected to be the most sought after free agent quarterback this year. That would force Philadelphia to make a number of hard salary cap decisions just to keep a backup quarterback.

His best run, of course, came in 2017 when he propelled the Eagles to the postseason and led them to their first Super Bowl win in franchise history.
