British actor Albert Finney, known for starring in movies like Tom Jones and Skyfall, has died, his family said. The statement added, "The family request privacy at this sad time".

Finney disclosed in 2011 that he had been suffering from kidney cancer, The Guardian reported.

The stage and screen star began his career at the Royal Shakespeare Company before enjoying a wildly successful career in film.

Another person said: "Best Albert Finney films, Miller's Crossing, Wolfen, Tom Jones, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, Murder On The Orient Express, one of the best films ever made". He later played the role of Arthur on "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning".

Many may recall him as Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks in the 1982 film "Annie" and as the title character in the 1970 musical film "Scrooge".

His first appearance was in The Entertainer in 1960, and he has bagged a number of lead roles since.

Finney, who twice refused official honors including a knighthood, also starred as Hercule Poirot in "Murder on the Orient Express (1974) and appeared in Erin Brockovich (2000) - for which he was nominated as Best Supporting Actor - and the James Bond film "Skyfall" (2012)".

He played alcoholic ex-diplomat Geoffrey Firmin in Under the Volcano, which brought him his fourth Oscar nomination, and would go on to earn another nod in 2001 for Erin Brockovich.

Finney's other memorable roles include Winston Churchill in The Gathering Storm, for which he won a Golden Globe and a Bafta.

He was married three times, to actresses Jane Wenham and Anouk Aimeé and finally to travel agent Pene Delmage in 2006, who has survived him with his son Simon, from his first marriage.
