BC CDC warns of measles outbreak in Washington State

Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency over the measles outbreak and OR officials have reported an infection has spread there.

Officials with Southwest District Health in Caldwell, Idaho say so far no measles cases have been reported in Idaho as a result of the outbreak. Most of the confirmed cases - 21 - were with children between 1 and 10 years old.

The BC Centre for Disease Control, a part of the Provincial Health Services Authority, provides public health leadership through surveillance, detection, treatment, prevention and consultation services. A person can spread the virus before they show symptoms. The state of New Jersey only recently declared an end to a flare-up of measles there in which 33 incidents were identified.

Measles is highly contagious and spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

The measles vaccine is available at local clinics and pharmacies as a combined measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine.

Health officials warn he came in contact with hundreds of people.

The CDC says that typically individuals get measles overseas in areas where immunization rates are low, and then spread the illness in pockets of unvaccinated people.

To avoid infecting others, Clark County Public Health urges anyone who believes they may have been exposed to measles or are experiencing symptoms of the disease to call a health-care provider, to discuss being evaluated before going to a doctor. Thirty of the confirmed cases are in Clark County and one confirmed case is in King County.

Across the U.S., 2 percent of children did not receive standard immunizations for non-medically exempt reasons in the 2017-2018 school year.

"Some people say, 'Why would you get vaccinated for something that is no worse than a cold?'" says Leman.

People who choose not to vaccinate their children are underestimating the dangers of the illness, said Melnick, who himself had measles as a child, before the vaccine was commonplace. The virus can lead to pneumonia (infection of the lungs) and encephalitis (swelling of the brain).

Schaffner adds, "It's no joke".
