Israel has pledged to prevent its main enemy Iran from entrenching itself militarily in Syria, where it is backing President Bashar al-Assad's regime alongside Russian Federation and Hezbollah.

"Just in the last 36 hours did the [Israel Air Force] attack Iranian warehouses with Iranian weapons at the worldwide airport in Damascus", the premier said.

Israel says Iran is seeking to establish a military presence in Syria that could threaten Israeli security by trying to transfer advanced weaponry to the Hezbollah terror group in Lebanon.

Israel is believed to have carried out hundreds of airstrikes against Iranian and Hezbollah targets throughout the Syrian civil war, but generally avoids commenting about them.

The strike Netanyahu was referring to occurred Friday night.

After previously reporting the discovery of five tunnels, the Israeli military said another had been found yesterday, 55 metres deep and reaching "a few tens of metres" into Israel from a point 800 metres within Lebanon.

The military said its forces would stay deployed along the border area to monitor for any other possible underground activity, and said it holds the Lebanese government responsible for everything happening in its territory.
