Democrat Gabbard says she will run for USA president in 2020

He asked her if she's going to run, and she responded, "I have chose to run and will be making a formal announcement within the next week". She later resigned her post as DNC vice chair to become one of Vermont Sen.

If elected, the 37-year-old lawmaker, who is known to surf the waters of her native Hawaii, would be the youngest president in USA history.

Gabbard, 37, who stepped down as DNC vice chair in 2016 to support Bernie Sanders in the Democratic Party primaries, has drawn flak from her side of the aisle, largely over her stance on gay rights and the USA involvement in Syria. In 2004, she volunteered for a 12-month tour of duty in Iraq while serving in the Hawaii Army National Guard, leaving her seat as a state legislator to do so.

The RNC released a "cheat sheet" of talking points following the news of Gabbard's pending announcement, though some took that as a sign of weakness.

Asked a year ago whether she would still consider running if Senator Sanders ran, Ms Gabbard said Senator Sanders is a friend and she did not know what his plans were.

She is the latest to join what is expected to be a crowded Democratic primary field before the November 2020 presidential election.

US, China leave future of trade talks unclear
The S&P 500 Index has fallen about 7 percent since Trump and Xi agreed on a 90-day truce at their meeting in Argentina last month. Buying had slumped after China imposed a 25 percent import duty on USA shipments of oilseed on July 6 in response to US tariffs.

"I stepped down from the legislature where I served, and headed to a war zone", Gabbard recalled at the 2012 Democratic National Convention.

Gabbard recalls that she found the meeting encouraging.

In 2017, Gabbard met with Syrian dictator Bashar Al-Assad and drew widespread criticism. She is said to have supported in 2014 a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage nationwide, but later reversed her opinion and applauded a Supreme Court decision to legalise gay marriage across the US.

Gabbard, 37, arrived in Congress six years ago after an underdog campaign for Hawaii's mostly rural 2nd District.

She was condemned by Democrats and Republicans alike, as the prevailing narrative in the U.S. is that the Syrian president is a war criminal because he purportedly used chemical weapons against civilians.

She's also been critical of her own party, calling out Hillary Clinton's track record of supporting foreign wars during the 2016 presidential primary. Former Vice President Joe Biden and former Rep. Robert Francis "Beto" O'Rourke (D-TX) are also reportedly considering running for president.

According to CNN, Senator Sanders's 2016 deputy campaign manager Rania Batrice will be Ms Gabbard's campaign manager.
