Rosenstein Will Stay Put Until Mueller Submits Report

The no 2 US Department of Justice official plans to stay on until the confirmation of attorney general nominee William Barr, sources say.

Barr is known for his expansive view of executive power and had previously sent an "unsolicited memo" to Rod Rosenstein criticizing special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing Russian Federation investigation.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer painted a different picture in remarks on the Senate floor, citing a memo Barr wrote to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein past year.

"I don't think there's any willingness by the President or the White House to push him out", Sanders said.

Rosenstein, the person said, was not being forced out and had always thought he would be in the high-octane position of deputy attorney general for about two years.

In November, the president said Rosenstein "should have never picked a special counsel" to investigate the Russian Federation matter and retweeted an image depicting Rosenstein and several other current and former officials in a prison cell.

"My guess is that he is making room for the new attorney general to build a team that he wants around him", she added.

Rosenstein, who was nominated to the post in February 2017 and had apparently thought of serving for about two years, and wants to ensure a smooth transition, several sources familiar with his plans told ABC News on Wednesday. He has long overseen the investigation and has frequently drawn Trump's ire.

Mr Rosenstein had reportedly considered resigning last fall after a report emerged that he suggested secretly recording Mr Trump.

"Barr must commit to supporting special counsel Mueller's investigation and allowing him to follow the facts", said Sen.

The Senate's confirmation hearings for Barr are scheduled to begin on January 15.

Graham listed a number of questions that he had put to Barr: "I asked Mr. Barr directly, 'Do you think Mr. Mueller is on a witch hunt?' He said no". Soon after, Rosenstein named Mueller as special counsel. Nevertheless, House Republicans in the Freedom Caucus targeted Rosenstein, who was nominated by Trump and confirmed by the Senate. Barr would most likely take over that role, since Rosenstein only assumed it after former Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself.

He has accused the investigation of being led by "Democrat loyalists".

President Trump's nominee to become the next attorney general began his round of visits to Capitol Hill on Wednesday as Washington prepared for a changing of the guard at the Justice Department.
