Failed redaction reveals Paul Manafort's 'lies to FBI'

In its filing on Tuesday (local time) the defence was trying to rebut allegations Manafort intentionally lied to Mr Mueller's team after agreeing to plead guilty last September.

Paul Manafort, the former Trump campaign chairman, provided polling data to a close associate during the 2016 campaign with instructions to share the information with Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, according to a report.

The filing contains new information about Manafort's connections to Konstantin Kilimnik, a Russian-Ukrainian business associate who was indicted past year on charges he tampered with potential witnesses.

Prosecutors said Manafort also lied about the circumstances of a $125,000 wire transfer in 2017. But while it's unclear what the one Manafort and Kilimnik discussed might have entailed, the Times notes that Manafort and Kilimnik have a history of pushing Russia's interests in Ukraine.

While it is unknown if the 2016 polling data was related to the Trump campaign, the fact that Manafort was the chairman of the Trump campaign during 2016, certainly doesn't bode well for those still denying that there was no collusion between the campaign and Russian Federation.

The filing also showed Manafort discussed a "Ukraine peace plan" with Kilimnik, according to the lawyers.

Lawyers for Paul Manafort appear to have missed a significant court filing deadline of midnight Tuesday to respond to the special counsel's office's accusation that he lied about five topics during his post-guilty-plea cooperation sessions.

In a July 7, 2016 Manafort told Kilimnik that he was willing to brief Deripaska on the Trump campaign.

"It is not surprising at all that Mr Manafort was unable to recall specific details prior to having his recollection refreshed", Manafort's team wrote.

The filing says that a May 26, 2018, text message exchange with Manafort involved an unidentified "third-party" who was asking permission to name-drop Manafort if the person met with Trump. The second example identified by the Special Counsel is hearsay purportedly offered by an undisclosed third party and the defense has not been provided with the statement (or any witness statements that form the basis for alleging intentional falsehoods).

Manafort was among the first Americans charged in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation and has been among the central characters in the case.

The conspiracy charges against Manafort are related to his consulting work advising pro-Russian politicians in Ukraine. Manafort "lied in multiple ways and on multiple occasions", prosecutors wrote, saying "these were not instances of mere memory lapses".

Manafort told a colleague in February - four months after he was indicted - that he was in contact with a senior administration official through that time, prosecutors said in accusing him of lying.

If he is found to have intentionally lied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the government could seek a tougher sentence - including a maximum of life in prison.
