In Brazil, Bolsonaro-ally calls for its own Guantanamo camp

Foreign Minister Ernesto Araújo confirmed Bolsonaro's willingness to allow a USA base in comments to reporters in Lima on Friday during a meeting of the Lima Group of 13 countries monitoring Venezuela's political and economic crisis.

Bolsonaro, the first far-right president elected in Brazil since the end of the country's military dictatorship in 1985, promised during his campaign to reduce state-run enterprises in favour of the private sector.

"We have a new ally, the new president intends to turn it into an even stronger relationship", Netanyahu said.

Last December, Maduro denounced that the US Security Advisor, John Bolton, assigned missions to Bolsonaro to initiate "military provocations" in the southern border of Venezuela.

"My approximation with the United States is economic, but it could also be warlike", said Bolsonaro, adding the base would be "symbolic" since American military power can reach any part of the globe.

A reform of Brazil's bloated pension system will be among Bolsonaro's biggest challenges, since he has yet to build a base in Congress.

He added that "the only weighty voice speaking out against me is Iran", the Shiite Islamic republic that is an enemy to Israel and hostile to Arab allies of the U.S. such as Saudi Arabia.

Bolsonaro, who took office this week, made the comments as he visited an air force base.

"We have a long cooperation, especially with the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration)".

The other topics, however, were not fully explained by Bolsonaro aides, leaving the impression of a gap between the president's ambitions and the ministers he has tasked with turning Brazil's economy around.

With the start of the new year, Brazil is about to witness a slew of changes in both the government and civic society. Bolsonaro argued it was necessary for people to defend themselves. After his election as Governor, he had announced the use of snipers against armed Suspects, even without immediate danger to the lives of police officers.

While authorities said the motive behind the attacks had not been confirmed, officials believed they were revenge for the recent announcement of tighter rules governing prisons and prisoners in the state.

Mr Moro previously led a vast investigation into Brazilian corruption known as Operation Car Wash.

Critics argue those ideas only risk inflaming Brazil's violent streets and worsening Brazil's murder tally, almost 64,000 people in 2017, a record.
