China Lands First Spacecraft on "Dark" Side of the Moon

It entered lunar orbit four days later.

To communicate with researchers at the China National Space Administration, Chang'e-4 relays signals to Queqiao, a satellite that's now circling above the moon's far side in a halo orbit.

Soon after it landed, the rover got to work and took a photo or two of its landing site, and already sent them back to Earth.

Since launching its first astronaut into space in 2003, China has been on an ambitious drive to catch up with the pack led by the United States.

"The space dream is part of the dream to make China stronger", President Xi Jinping said in 2013, shortly after becoming China's leader.

To overcome the problem, the China National Space Administration launched the Queqiiao relay satellite, last May to assist with the relay exchange between Earth and the Chang'e-4 probe. "There's no doubt that our nation will go farther and farther". Additional confirmation of the mission's success appeared on the official state broadcast network CCTV, who reported the lunar explorer landed successfully on the moon's surface at 10:26 AM (02.26 GMT). A big reason for this mission is, well, because we can.As the name implies, Chang'e-4 is not the first of its kind.

The hemispheres of the Moon differ from each other in many ways. "On Mars, you can pick out smooth areas".

A Chinese spacecraft made the first-ever landing on the far side of the moon on Tuesday, as announced by Chinese state media. If successful, this would be the first lunar sample return since the Soviet Luna 24 mission in 1976.

While the far side is sometimes called the "dark" side, that's relative to our lack of knowledge about it: The phases of the moon seen from Earths still occur, in reverse, on the opposite side.

The probe, which has a lander and a rover, will conduct surveys on terrain, mineral composition and other environmental qualities in collaboration with countries including the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and Saudi Arabia. The landing on Thursday brought the country closer to its goal of becoming a space power.

'The probe will provide important information for studying the origin of stars and nebula evolution'.

The far side of the moon, because it faces away from Earth, isn't polluted by radio "noise" from our planet.

"There are rocks all over the far side that are over 4 billion years old", she said.
