U.S. News and World Report has released its annual list of the best diets, just in time for all those new year's resolutions. The Mediterranean diet was also ranked high in multiple categories including: Easiest Diets to Follow, Best Diets for Healthy Eating, Best Diets for Diabetes, and Best Diets for Hearth Health.
It's the Mediterranean diet-with a score of 4.2 out of 5 possible points-which probably doesn't come as a surprise to the nutrition-savvy among us.
The Mediterranean diet has been linked to increased longevity and a decreased risk of chronic illnesses, the report said.
Rich in low-starch vegetables, fruit, healthy fats (mostly from olives and olive oil), nuts, seeds, whole grains, legumes, and fish, the Mediterranean diet eschews simple sugars and refined starches and is low in red meat.
The diet, named for the region that includes Norway, Iceland, Finland, Denmark and Sweden, is an example of a growing interest in diets followed by some of the healthiest people in the world, according to Angela Haupt, assistant managing editor of health at U.S. News and World Report.
WW also retained the #2 spot for "Easiest to Follow" diet, which speaks to the livability of the program.

The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet was created to help manage blood pressure, but experts say it has many overall health benefits, helping it nab the number 2 spot on the best overall diets list.

"Every year we have a new fad or trend or a flashy diet but that trickery doesn't amount to much and you don't need something that's excited or really even complicated", Haupt said.
The eating plan features a wide variety of options, including fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, poultry, and fish.
