Felipe Gomez Alonzo is the second migrant child to die in the custody of immigration officials this month.

But Lucas Perez, the mayor of Yalambojoch, said some coyotes are only interested in ripping off people.

The screenings were ordered after an 8-year-old child died in the custody of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

He also wanted a new bicycle, like another boy in the village purchased with money sent after his father went to work in the United States.

The boy's mother, 31-year-old Catarina Alonzo Perez, said she spoke with her son the day before they arrived at the USA border.

Father and son ended up in a holding cell in Alamogordo, New Mexico, on Christmas Eve, after days of being shuttled from one Border Patrol facility to another.

"They were built 30 to 40 years ago for single adult males, and we need a different approach", McAleenan added.

An eight-year-old Guatemalan boy who died in us custody this week had trekked to the border with his father from a rural northwestern village, Guatemala's government said on Wednesday, following thousands of others who have made the area a hot spot of migration.

The agency did not say how many children are now under its care.

Earlier in the month, a 7-year-old Guatemalan girl also passed away in CBP custody.

12pm: Two days later, Felipe and his father are transferred to the El Paso border patrol station, where they spend another two days in detention.

Marco Ugarte Migrant Child's Death Requires Separate Probe Independent of DHS- US Lawyers

Late Thursday, leading House Democrats called on DHS to preserve "all evidence" related to the deaths, and vowed to conduct hearings after Democrats take control of the House next week. "It would also allow me to present my recommendations to the US government to fulfill its global commitments to respect and protect the human rights of all migrants". But with border crossings surging, CBP processes thousands of children - both alone and with their parents - every month. He believed he'd pay it off easily after working in the United States.

"Democrats call on Homeland Security's Inspector General to immediately open an investigation into Felipe Alzono-Gomez's death", she said in a statement.

But on the sixth day in custody, he fell ill.

CBP released a timeline of the events it says ensued after Felipe and his father, Agustin Gomez, were detained near El Paso on December 18.

CBP said in a statement that it needs the help of other government agencies to provide healthcare. "He was well. He was happy".

Felipe was taken with his father to the Alamogordo hospital, where he was diagnosed with a common cold, according to the timeline. She had a 105.7-degree fever. The child was given prescriptions for Amoxicillin and Ibuprofen and was released.

"The doctor said his health was OK, " she said her father told her. He was eventually hospitalized twice and died.

It said that Border Patrol officials had detained almost 140,000 people seeking to enter the country illegally in the last two months. That evening, Gomez started vomiting, and his father declined medical help because his son had been feeling better, CBP said. "But then he said he felt bad and his stomach ached", Felipe's stepsister told the AP.

Alonzo, an Indigenous Maya and native speaker of Chuj, has little Spanish and communicated through a translator.

At 10 p.m., Homeland Security officials said, Felipe appeared lethargic and nauseated, so the agents took him back to the hospital. "It can't be. Don't abandon me here".

She said the family would ask the USA government for two things: Return Felipe's body so that they can bury him in Guatemala, and let his father work in the United States so that "my brother's death won't be in vain".
