Search underway for man who killed Northern California police officer


Authorities are hunting for a man wanted for gunning down a police officer in Newman, California, during a traffic stop Wednesday morning.

Stanislaus County Sheriff's Deputy Royjindar Singh is now left to describe his colleague and friend, 33-year-old Ronil Singh, a police officer with the Newman Police Department.

Personnel from multiple agencies arrived to assist Singh and found him suffering from gunshot wounds.

Singh was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Officer Ronil Singh, 33, pulled over the suspect just before 1 a mostly residential part of Newman, a city of 11,000 located about 70 miles east of San Jose.

Investigators say the suspect's vehicle had an "AR Auto" paper license plate.

The public was asked for information about his identity and the California Highway Patrol warned that he was considered armed and unsafe.

A report in KCRA3 news said that Mr Singh was a native of Fiji and had immigrated to America.

He had previously served with the two other police departments in the US. He is survived by a wife and an infant son.

Flags will be flown at half-staff at the Capitol building in Sacramento, Brown said in offering condolences.

The New York Police Department, in a separate tweet, said after years of service with the Newman Police Department, "Singh was shot & killed while conducting a traffic stop shortly after Christmas day".
