Solskjaer wants United players to enjoy their football

Solskjaer was appointed caretaker manager on Tuesday morning after the club sacked Jose Mourinho from his duties, and many jumped to criticise the appointment, pointing out his record at Cardiff City back in 2014 among other things.

"That's our identity. It doesn't just go back to the Class of '92, it goes back even further than Sir Alex and back to Sir Matt Busby".

Solskjaer, who became something of a famous "super sub" during his successful playing career at Old Trafford, has made it clear that all his squad will get a chance to impress during the busy Christmas schedule and wants them to approach every match with the sort of mentality that became common in Alex Ferguson's time at the club.

Solskjaer said: "Of course, I have watched the Premier League, I have seen all the teams, so I have got a little bit of a view on them".

"At Man United, you play without fear. I've already been in touch with him because there's no one better to get advice from".

Having the same kind of influence while sat in a dugout alongside former United midfielder and ex-Ferguson sidekick Mike Phelan, who was named as his assistant on Wednesday, will be the biggest test yet of Solskjaer's lesser-known managerial capabilities.

"It feels like coming home".

Mourinho won the EFL Cup and Europa League during his spell in charge but departs with United sixth in the Premier League, 19 points behind leaders Liverpool and 11 adrift of the top four.

"The way he's dealt with people, the way he was manager of the club. We'll get the players enjoying their football again".

The Frenchman cost United around £89million in August 2016, with many Manchester United fans perplexed as to how he could be used as a substitute in recent fixtures.

"I'm looking forward to seeing them".

Solskjaer will hit the ground running at United, who will play five matches in 15 days beginning with Saturday's Premier League clash at Cardiff, where the former Norway global spent nine months as a coach in 2014.

"I'm getting to know the occupation, but it's about man-management - it's about managing the players, managing people, managing the staff, talking to everyone and getting the best out of everyone". Everyone starts with a clean slate.

Solskjaer spoke with positivity about his players and his group - a far cry from predecessor Mourinho - and will hope to kickstart their Champions League hopes with a win at Cardiff. "They all want to be part of Manchester United and I am here to help them".
