On Nov. 25, Russian forces seized three Ukrainian naval ships as well as 24 sailors on board attempting to sail through the Kerch Strait from the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov, for they allegedly violated the Russian border.
The Pentagon said the Ukrainian military had requested the flight, which was on an OC-135 surveillance plane and had observers from the US, Canada, Germany, France, Britain, Romania and Ukraine aboard.
The November 25 confrontation was the first open military incident between Kiev and Moscow since 2014 when Russian Federation annexed the Crimean peninsula and a conflict erupted in eastern Ukraine.
The flight was the second American military gesture made this week after Russian Federation shot at and seized three Ukrainian naval vessels and their crew members off the Crimean Peninsula in November.
The last time the U.S. carried out a similar military exercise was after the Russian invasion of Ukraine four years ago, United States defence official said.
This was the first "extraordinary" flight under the Open Skies Treaty since 2014, the Pentagon said.
The US Air Force OC-135 observation plane was flown near Crimea, the Ukrainian region seized by Russian Federation in 2014, the Pentagon said.

The Pentagon has reportedly asked the State Department to inform Turkey that it planned to send a warship to the Black Sea.
"We are on the verge of a real continental war, the cause of which can be a military clash on any day in Russian Federation and Ukraine".
Under the Geneva Convention relative to the treatment of prisoners of war signed on August 12, 1949, they can not be considered as prisoners of war, as Russian Federation and Ukraine are not "in a state of a military conflict or at war", he added. Since then, Washington has sought to show its support for Ukraine while condemning Russian actions.
The Pentagon emphasized that "the timing of this flight is meant to reaffirm United States commitment and support to Ukraine and other partner nations".
Pahon said the plane had a 17-member crew from the 55th Wing based at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska.
