Mourners Pay Tribute to President George HW Bush at US Capitol

As the 72-year-old Bush arrived at the National Cathedral for the state funeral for his father - the 41st USA president - he shook hands with President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania.

Indeed, the funeral occurred at the same church where services were held in April for Barbara Bush, which was remembered for an emotional scene when the former president gazed from his wheelchair up at her casket, then shook hands with well-wishers.

But many tributes in recent days have focused on the former Republican president as a man of integrity and kindness who represented an earlier era of civility in American politics. The elder Bush never warmed to Trump and voted for Trump's 2016 challenger, Democrat Hillary Clinton. He praised Bush as a "truly attractive human being" who had the "courage of a warrior but the greater courage of a peacemaker".

She is in Washington for the state funeral of her father-in-law, former President George H.W. Bush, who died last week at age 94. "President Bush was a great friend and ally of the United Kingdom".

"He was not considered a skilled speaker, but his deeds were quite eloquent and he demonstrated their eloquence by carving them into the hard granite of history", Baker said, his voice cracking at moments, summarising Bush's accomplishments in foreign policy.

"He taught us public service was noble and necessary", his son and the 43rd president, George W. Bush, told the invited guests at Washington National Cathedral.

The late Mr Bush called Mr Trump a "blowhard".

Joining George W. Bush as eulogists Wednesday: Alan Simpson, the former senator and acerbic wit from Wyoming, Brian Mulroney, the former Canadian prime minister who also gave a eulogy for Reagan; and presidential historian Jon Meacham.

With Mr Bush's casket atop the 1865 Lincoln Catafalque - a platform used to raise caskets - dignitaries also came to honour the president, whose efforts for his country extended three quarters of a century from World War II through his final years in advocacy.

There will be a 21-gun cannon salute after the Lord's Prayer is recited. And the Trumps visited members of the Bush family at the Blair House presidential guesthouse, where they are staying.
