Bush, who died at age 94 - almost eight months after his wife of 73 years died at their Houston home - was a congressman, an ambassador to the United Nations and envoy to China, chairman of the Republican National Committee, director of the Central Intelligence Agency, two-term vice president and, finally, president. Not only was he the 41st President of the USA, he served as Vice President under Ronald Reagan for two terms, from 1981 to 1989, and his eldest son George Jnr also attained the White House as the 43rd President.

In his retirement years, Bush watched as one of his sons, George W. Bush, twice won the presidency, only the second time in USA history that a father and son both became the US leaders.

A brief but deep recession saw the popularity he gained from his diplomatic win evaporate, costing him a second term in office.

In 1971, Bush had recently lost a bid for election to the Senate, and was serving as President Richard Nixon's ambassador to the United Nations, a role he filled until 1973.

The university not only named its school of government after Bush, but the Bush Library and Museum is also housed on campus, which is a place the former president enjoyed visiting often.

On Friday night, following news of Bush's death, Meacham tweeted a quotation from a prayer: "Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and may light perpetual shine upon him".

Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper released a statement on Bush's passing, saying Bush was a "conservative leader and deeply devoted family man", and left behind "an incredible, enduring legacy".

Bush was the father to former President George W. Bush and to Florida governor Jeb Bush. The president did not attend McCain's funeral, where Obama and George W Bush both delivered tributes.

George H.W. Bush enlisted in the Navy on his 18th birthday in 1942, right out of prep school.

Bush had one of the most impressive résumés in American public life.

Bush presided over economic malaise at home, and infuriated his fellow Republicans during a budget battle with rival Democrats by famously breaking his vow: "Read my Lips: No new taxes".

Mrs Bush died in April 2018.
