Lucian parents react to Amber Guyger murder charge

Court records were posted Friday before Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson held a press conference announcing the decision of a grand jury on the fate of Amber Guyger.

In a news conference Friday, Johnson denied she had waited too long to seek a murder charge against Guyger. She says a murder charge is intentionally and knowingly killing a person, while a manslaughter offence is recklessly killing a person.

Guyger was initially charged with manslaughter, which is punishable up to 20 years of prison.

While Guyger has changed details of the shooting over time, she now claims that she returned home from a shift, mistook Jean's apartment for her own (it was located directly above her own), somehow gained access to the apartment and then shot Jean, fearing he was burglar.

The officer told police that she concluded her apartment was being burglarized and gave verbal commands to the figure, which ignored them.

Botham Jean, a 26-year-old native of the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, died September 6 after Guyger walked into his apartment and shot him twice.

Guyger turned herself in to authorities Friday afternoon.

Guyger told investigators that after work, she went to her apartment building and parked on the fourth floor of the complex's garage, rather than the third floor, where her unit was located, according to an affidavit prepared by the Texas Rangers.

Robert Rogers says there has been a wave of "vindictive emotion" from people looking to indict Amber Guyger, who fatally shot her unarmed neighbour Botham Jean in his own apartment.

Her office, Johnson said, took its time before seeking an indictment in the case to ensure that it could paint the best possible picture of the shooting to the grand jury.

"I am indeed satisfied with the indictment for murder of Amber Guyger because I truly believe that she inflicted tremendous evil on my son".

The grand jury upgraded the charge to murder.

"I had confidence once we did that, they knew exactly what to do", she said. And then there's the element of race: "Guyger is white; Jean was black". Only after calling 911 did she turn on the lights and realize she wasn't in her apartment, according to the affidavit. Jean was later transported to the hospital where he died. She has since been fired from the department.

Guyger was sacked on September 24.

Guyger has since been fired from the department and Jean's family has filed a lawsuit against Guyger and the city of Dallas.

Mata called for Guyger to have fair treatment, but also said she should answer for her actions.

When asked if she felt Guyger still has an opportunity to come clean, Allison said, "Absolutely, during the trial, she still has a chance to come clean, the only thing is every time I read an account of what happened on September 6th, it's different to what I heard the first time".
