Comey wrote Sunday on Twitter that he was "grateful for a fair hearing from judge".

"Hard to protect my rights without being in contempt, which I don't believe in".

Republicans on the United States House of Representatives Judiciary Committee pledged to provide Mr Comey with a full transcript within 24 hours of his testimony, and he will be permitted to "make any or all of that transcript public", Mr Comey's lawyer David Kelley told Reuters in a statement. Republicans have said the Federal Bureau of Investigation is biased against Mr Trump, pointing to Mr Comey's decision to publicly announce that the Federal Bureau of Investigation would not bring charges against Mrs Clinton.

Comey also "moved on Sunday to withdraw his motion to quash the congressional subpoena", CNN reported.

Goodlatte and other House Republicans have been investigating the FBI and Justice Department's handling of separate probes into Hillary Clinton's email practices and Russian interference in the 2016 election, and with just a few weeks left before he leaves Congress, Goodlatte has moved to compel testimony from Comey and former Attorney General Loretta Lynch.

House Republicans have also subpoenaed former Attorney General Loretta Lynch to testify about whether her conversations with former President Bill Clinton on a Phoenix tarmac influenced the Clinton investigation. He dropped his legal fight against the subpoena on Sunday, compelling him to testify behind closed doors. Subpoenaed witnesses aren't entitled to dictate the terms under which they deliver testimony on Capitol Hill. "This ensures both transparency and access for the American people to all the facts".

Incoming Democratic Committee chairman Rep.

Mr Comey agreed to sit down for a closed-door deposition on Friday.

"Whatever the aim of House Republicans, they are likely feeling the need to act quickly before Democrats, who won control of the chamber in elections earlier this month, take over in January".

The statement notes that Comey "ultimately made the decision" and was the "primary author of the press statement" announcing the decision not to prosecute Clinton.

Comey's lawyers argued that a closed hearing would allow for 'selective leaks, is abusive to witnesses, and furthers no legitimate congressional objective'.
