Trump touts new US BMW factory. But that's not happening

In a series of tweets, Trump said a long-time 25 percent tariff on small trucks has benefited us auto manufactures, and argued that a similar tariff for imported cars would protect USA manufacturing jobs, which could thus avoid a GM scenario.

"Get smart Congress. Also, the countries that send us cars have taken advantage of the USA for decades", Trump wrote.

In a tweet Thursday slamming General Motors for plans to lay off workers, Trump wrote that auto companies "are pouring into the U.S." and GM is "very counter" to the rest of the industry.

BMW builds more cars in its USA factory than it sells in the United States. The changes come as part of a global restructuring for the company, which has said it will move away from lower-selling sedan models to focus on electric and autonomous cars, as well as crossovers, SUVs and efficient trucks. A day earlier, Trump issued a vague threat to GM warning it to preserve a key plant in the presidential bellwether state of OH, where the company has marked its Lordstown plant for closure. General Motors just let its workers know that they aren't.

"The EU has a retaliation tariffs list ready if the U.S. imposes autos tariffs on the EU", she said Wednesday. The decision also affects employment at GM locations in Baltimore and Michigan's Brownstown and Warren transmission plants.

It is among the five GM plants across North America that are set to close next year.

BMW is considering building a second plant in the United States.

New Orleans is 8-1 at home and its only loss came earlier in the season when Davis was sidelined by a different injury. They rank 28th in the league in field goal percentage as a team and are one of the league's lowest scorers on average.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that she did not have any additional information on the president's threat.

When contacted by Fortune, GM did not comment on the president's threat or indicate whether it receives federal subsidies.

The EU has already retaliated against the United States earlier this year for the steep tariffs Trump imposed on steel and aluminum, which Brussels says are "deeply unjustified".

The threat of auto tariffs continues to loom large over the vehicle manufacturing sector. But it later negotiated concessions from the union and reopened the plant to build the Chevrolet Sonic subcompact auto. Tesla surpassed 200,000 cumulative EV sales in the USA earlier this year, and Bloomberg NEF analysts project that GM will probably exceed that mark this quarter.

Canada and Mexico, two other major sources of U.S. auto imports, are set to be exempted from any tariffs as a result of the new version of the North American Free Trade Agreement negotiated by Trump.

"The actions we are taking today continue our transformation to be highly agile, resilient and profitable, while giving us the flexibility to invest in the future", said GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra in a statement.

Ohio Congressman Tim Ryan said that he's "pissed off about the whole thing" and claimed that GM has a "blatant disregard for workers in the country".
