CNN fires Marc Lamont Hill for anti-Israel comments

He took to Twitter on Thursday to defend his comments. I support Palestinian self-determination", Hill tweeted, adding: "I do not support anti-Semitism, killing Jewish people, or any of the other things attributed to my speech. "At no point did I endorse, support, or even mention Hamas". The term refers to erasing Israel from the map and having a free Palestine in its place. The world rejoiced as the elusive two-state solution finally seemed inevitable.

Palestine and Israel have been in an ongoing land dispute that has often become violent. Today, almost 750,000 settlers live in the occupied territories, and some of the settlements are major cities. Israel unilaterally uprooted every man, woman, child and soldier from Gaza in 2005, a move that led to Hamas' emergence.

Two Israeli soldiers have been killed over the same period, one by a Palestinian sniper and another during a blown Israeli special forces operation within the Gaza Strip.

Yousef Munayyer - executive director of the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights - argued in acolumnfor theHuffington Postthat Hill was "targeted by what can only be described as an organized campaign to silence his principled and consistent advocacy against racism and for the equal treatment of all people, including Palestinians".

Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon told reporters Tuesday that "the fact that people discuss Hamas in the a win-win".

Ashrawi continued, "Israel's extremist, racist government coalition headed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is deliberately and systematically working to complete the total annexation and isolation of Jerusalem from its Palestinian environs and surrounding areas, as well as the distortion of the occupied city's demographic, historical and cultural character". The school stood by him on Thursday, saying in a statement: "Marc Lamont Hill does not represent Temple University and his views are his own".

According to Ishteiwi, Israeli troops used both heavy ammunition and rubber bullets - in addition to teargas - to disperse Palestinian demonstrators, who responded by throwing stones.

Hill was criticised for his comments, with some claiming they were anti-Semitic.

To oppose Hill's vision of freedom and equality without simultaneously opposing Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories is effectively an endorsement of apartheid.

This is not the first time the American news channel has dismissed journalists over comments they made vis-a-vis their political stances. Suppression of advocacy for Palestinian rights in the United States goes back decades, and the current iteration of this suppression campaign isn't just about career consequences - there are efforts underway to formalize punishments for Palestine advocacy.

Hill, 39, who later admitted on Twitter that he has never been to Israel, also endorsed BDS: "We must promote nonviolence at every opportunity, but can not endorse narrow politics that shames Palestinians for resisting, for refusing to do nothing in ethnic cleansing". There are also efforts to expand the definition of anti-Semitism to include criticism of Israel, a transparent attempt to chill campus activism on Palestine.

Ashrawi added, "These measures pose a strategic threat to Palestinian human and national rights, especially through the imposition of new and "permanent" realities on the ground that deliberately undermine the achievement of Palestinian statehood".
