Manafort lied after pleading guilty, Mueller's team says

Asked by ABC's Jonathan Karl at Tuesday's briefing whether the president is considering having his acting attorney general fire Mueller given his tweet earlier in the day accusing Mueller of "ruining people's lives", Sanders said the president now has "no intent" of doing so.

"Wait until it comes out how horribly and viciously they are treating people, ruining lives for them refusing to lie", Trump wrote on Twitter.

Mueller says Trump's ex-campaign chairman repeatedly lied.

Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort has breached his plea deal by lying to federal investigators, according to a court filing, in a potential setback to the special counsel's probe into Russia's meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

"The morning after stunning news revealed Mueller has rescinded his cooperation deal with former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, now accused of lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the president cried that the "$30,000,000 Witch Hunt continues and they've got nothing but ruined lives".

Manafort denied doing so intentionally, but both sides agreed in a court filing that U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson of the District should set sentencing immediately. While Manafort's attorneys claim that he has not actually lied to investigators, the government says otherwise, and ultimately it is the government's opinion that matters in his upcoming sentencing hearing.

Manafort's attorney's responded that their client "provided information to the government in an effort to live up to his cooperation obligations".

In September, Manafort pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice and one count of conspiracy against the US.

The intervention means Mr Manafort could potentially face bank fraud charges, which were dismissed as part of the plea bargain.

In September, questioning of potential jurors had started in the D.C. Circuit for Manafort's next trial on seven counts of conspiracy, witness tampering and lobbying violations in respect to working on behalf of a foreign government when he agreed to a deal to avert the second trial. He'll be sentenced in February in his criminal case in Virginia, which he took to trial and lost. Ellis let the case go forward, but Mueller's motives were plain.

Prosecutors indicated in Monday's filing that they will soon file a "detailed sentencing submission" that will lay out the nature of Manafort's alleged "crimes and lies", including those that occurred after he signed a plea deal.

Also on Monday, another former Trump campaign aide, George Papadopoulos, began serving a two-week jail term as part of his plea deal with Mueller's team. "I did not. I will not lie to save my life", Corsi said. The information was brought about during a court filing.

Another Mueller case charged that Russians working for and associated with a St. Petersburg troll farm, the Internet Research Agency, ran a social-media disinformation campaign during the election that was aimed at stoking divisions between USA voters on controversial issues such as immigration, race, and gun control.

Manafort's guilty plea came after a lengthy court battle during which his lawyers put up an aggressive defense against Mueller by challenging his authority and arguing that he had overstepped the scope of his mandate when he charged Manafort with crimes unrelated to Russian collusion.
