An inspired Alexander Zverev beat world No.1 Djokovic 6-4 6-3 to win the ATP Finals on Monday, the biggest title of the German's fledgling career.
Zverev won the point with an ace and nudged into a 5-4 lead before Federer inexplicably netted with a simple forehand volley to hand the German two set points, the second of which he took on his own serve.
"I've had most success in my career in Australia", said Djokovic, who has won six times in Melbourne. I think he was putting Sascha on the back foot, but you could see on the replay, it actually happened.
Not only did he become the youngest victor of the title since Djokovic 10 years ago, and the first German to triumph since Boris Becker in 1995, Zverev also became only the fourth player to beat Federer and Djokovic back-to-back in the semi-final and final of the same tournament.
That is still the test next year but on Sunday he displayed an added sense of maturity, to go with the natural flair and easy power that have marked him out as a future number one.
Yet this was a deserved victory for Zverev, who broke his opponent four times in total and finished the match with a vicious, curling passing shot which could very well have come from the boot of the watching David Beckham. I was very happy for him, as well.
Zverev is all set to finish the year as the fourth-ranked player behind Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Federer.
Year underwater: the military found the "lost" submarine, but not all
During the retrofitting, the vessel was cut in half and had its engines and batteries replaced. The Argentine navy said it could have been the sound of the submarine imploding.
Pence says South China Sea doesn't belong to any one nation
According to the Friday report, the president has been asking aides and advisers whether they believe Pence is loyal. The publication added that Trump's incessant inquiries are usually a sign that "he is irritated with someone".
Barcelona midfielder Busquets frustrated as Croatia defeat Spain
In the second half they dropped their level physically and we had a lot of chances, above all in the six yard box. The teams that finish bottom of the group in League A are relegated to a group in League B.
Having ended a two-year Grand Slam title drought by defeating Anderson in the Wimbledon final, Djokovic went on to win his 14th major trophy at the U.S. Open and has already sealed the year-end No. 1 ranking. Finishing as world number one after having surgery this year, I don't know if that has been done before.
There is not much difference between the Novak we have seen recently and the Novak who topped the world rankings for 122 weeks, and held all four Grand Slam titles, at his peak in 2015 and 2016.
"We [Djokovic and Zverev] had so many talks, not only about tennis but all different types of subjects - I won't mention what - but you are a sharing person and you have shared some titles with me".
"I want to apologise to the crowd, Roger has a lot of fans here and for what he's achieved he should have".
"I will do everything I can to get better, to compete with them always".
I was impressed with how he started the match, obviously he was the underdog, he lost in straight sets to Novak a couple of days ago, and he didn't blink. But still I have a lot of things to improve. "I was very emotional afterwards".
It is very fearless for Sascha to ask someone like Lendl to join his coaching team.
