Women Help Lead Democrats to US House Majority

Two Muslim women have been elected to the House of Representatives for the first time. Stefanik was previously the youngest person ever elected, as she was 30 when she won her first campaign in 2014.

Ocasio-Cortez' victory over Republican Anthony Pappas, an economics professor, had been widely expected since the Democratic primary in June, when she scored an unanticipated upset over 10-term U.S. Rep. Joe Crowley.

If more than 84 of those women candidates won on Tuesday, it would set a record for the number of women serving in the House.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Jared Polis handily defeated Republican state Treasurer Walker Stapleton in the Colorado governor's race Tuesday, becoming the first openly gay man to be elected governor in the United States.

Deb Haaland, also a Native American, was also elected a congresswoman.

Texas is sending its first ever Hispanic women to congress, as Veronica Escobar snapped up Beto O'Rouke's old seat and state Sen.

For this wave of women leaders, the next few years are going to be about much more than stereotypical women's issues.
