Red Star upsets Liverpool in Champions League

Jurgen Klopp decided to make some changes from the side that drew at Arsenal last weekend with Lallana coming in for Fabinho in midfield while Daniel Sturridge was also preferred ahead of Roberto Firmino up front.

Pavkov leapt above defenders Virgil Van Dijk and Joel Matip to power Marko Marin's delivery low beyond Alisson in the Liverpool goal with just 22-minutes on the clock.

But the introduction of Roberto Firmino and Joe Gomez did little to galvanise the Reds and Red Star held on to claim a famous victory.

"We had a chance and they defended on the line after two headers from us".

Liverpool will embark on a trip to Belgrade, as they gear up to take on Serbian outfit Crvena Zvezda in their Group C encounter of the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League at the Rajko Mitic Stadium on Tuesday night.

Mohamed Salah might have hit the post late on but it was a rare big chance in a game which really exposed Liverpool's need to sign a top class creative midfielder in January to have any chance of winning silverware this season.

"We're still confident we'll get through but we need to go to try and prove that now".

Klopp needs to find a way to utilise his new resources and rediscover Liverpool's mojo quickly to avoid an embarrassing early European exit.

He got all the first-team reps and (was) really focused and was really in on it, and he played the game exactly like he practiced. He averaged just over six yards per attempt and threw a costly interception that was returned for a touchdown.

On whether he's concerned at Liverpool losing both away games so far in the group...

The Reds are now third, level on points with second placed Chelsea and just two points behind leaders Manchester City, with all three sides still unbeaten. Then more or less straight away they score the second one and then the atmosphere was completely different, you could feel it.

They didn't give up fighting, they stayed concentrated and they gave everything.

Firmino also praised manager Klopp for helping to develop his game. We have a long flight home and have enough time to think about it.

"We need to win our games, it's on our shoulders.it's in our hands but we will have to play better than we did tonight". They deserved it for the passion they showed.

The visitors began to mount some real pressure on the Red Star goal during the final exchanges, but they were unable to carve out anything of note in front of goal.

That was of little concern to Red Star's players, however, as they joined arms and took the acclaim of their supporters on the full-time whistle.
