Democratic congressional candidate Ilhan Omar reacts after appearing at her midterm election night party in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Nov. 6, 2018.

Among those elected was Somali-American, Ilhan Omar, who easily won the election in Minnesota district.

Omar said President Trump's "politics of fear" motivated her to get in the race.

The Palestinian-American won the Democrat primary for the seat in August with around a third of the total vote share.

In Michigan, Rashida Tlaib, 42, was elected to represent the 13th district, which is one of the safest Democratic seats.

Ilhan Omar, a 36-year-old Somali refugee, who immigrated to the United States as a teenager, beat Republican Jennifer Zielinski to take Ellison's seat.

Omar, who arrived in the United States at the age of 14 after fleeing civil war in Somalia and lived in Kenya's Dadaab camp, campaigned on a platform which called for universal healthcare and tuition-free colleges.
