Speaking at Friday's memorial at a Washington hotel, Democratic Rep. Gerry Connolly, who represents the northern Virginia district where Khashoggi had been based for the past year of his life, said that since the killing, Saudi Arabia has "blatantly concocted a series of lies" in its attempt to cover up what happened. "We have to resolve our issues by our own will".

"Jamal Khashoggi was not a unsafe person in any way possible".

"Nonetheless, I must add that our friendship with Riyadh, which goes back a long time, doesn't mean we will turn a blind eye to the premeditated murder that unfolded in front of our very eyes", he continued.

A source close to the Saudi Royal Palace told CNN last week that the location of Khashoggi's body was not known to the Saudis.

Hours before the memorial, Cengiz wrote about Khashoggi in an opinion piece for The Washington Post, saying, "As we witness the worldwide outrage at his killing, the perpetrators should know that they can never erase his vision for his beloved country".

Meanwhile, reports quote Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as telling the U.S. he considered murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi to be a risky Islamist.

The memorial was organized by the Justice for Jamal Khashoggi campaign.

Arab media highlighted Turkey's statement about the violent death on October 2 of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

Yasin Aktay, a ruling party adviser to Erdogan, told The Associated Press on Friday that "there can be no other formula" to explain why Khashoggi's remains have not been found a month after he was killed.

"Khashoggi was killed according to a plan previously prepared and his body was dismembered and discarded", the newspaper said, citing the Turkish statement.

Erdogan also displayed more conciliatory language in the op-ed, stressing the "friendly relations" between Saudi Arabia and Turkey and stating that he had "no reason to believe that this murder reflected Saudi Arabia's official policy".

"They aimed to ensure no sign of the body was left". Who is the "local collaborator" to whom Saudi officials claimed to have handed over Khashoggi's remains?

Prince Mohammed also reportedly urged the White House to preserve the US-Saudi alliance. He was a Washington Post contributor living in self-imposed exile in the United States since 2017, and had voiced some mild criticism of Saudi Arabia's powerful Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman (MbS).

During the call with President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and National Security Adviser John Bolton, Prince Mohammed said Khashoggi had been a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, a transnational Islamist organisation, the Washington Post reported.

Saudi Arabia has continued shifting its version of events, first denying any knowledge of Khashoggi's whereabouts, and then acknowledging his death 17 days later.

Khalid bin Ahmad tweeted that "despite the ongoing dispute, (Netanyahu) has taken a clear position on the importance of stability in the region and Saudi Arabia's role in consolidating that stability".
