Revamp For Simplification: Facebook Redesigns Messenger App

Facebook thinks the Messenger mobile app has become too cluttered for its 1.3 billion users, and is rolling out a new version that addresses that complexity, plus lays the groundwork for its Stories ad business.

The company is also adding a few minor new features, like the ability to change the color of your chat bubbles to gradients, and a new dark mode.

Coming later, for example, is a feature called Dark Mode, a re-skinned interface that aims to cut down on the glare from your phone.

Finally Facebook has come to their senses, and have announced an update to their confusing cluster of features, called "Messenger 4". As a result, the app was a massive data and battery hog, prompting users to install its less-bloated variant Messenger Lite.

Facebook has positioned Messenger as a tool for businesses to efficiently handle customer questions or concerns. Moving on to the Discover tab, this tab is where you can connect with businesses and find different deals.

There is a new inclusion worth talking about: color gradients for chat bubbles in conversations. Facebook Messenger is a standalone app that lets Facebook users chat with their friends.

"While Messenger 4 is all about simpler and easier-to-use messaging, we're still keeping all of the features that help you connect with the people you care about".

Consider this: The current version of the app has nine - yes, nine - tabs. Messenger 4 integrates Chats, People and Discover, which allows you to access games and businesses.

Up until the launch of Messenger 4, the messaging service had nine tabs you could switch between.

"In a recent Messenger study, seven out of 10 (71 percent) people told us simplicity is the top priority for them in a messaging app".

According to the company, no major features are being removed but you may find things have been moved after the update so features you may be accustomed to using aren't where you expect them. Even though the redesign looks lovely, the Messenger chat app will look mostly the same and function like other chat apps, which limits the excitement from the update.

"We try to be very careful to not do anything bad for user experience", Chudnovsky said of the company's process of slowly introducing more advertisements. "It's not as simple as the app was at the beginning", said Stan Chudnovsky, the head of product for Facebook Messenger.
