A lucky lotto victor is about to be $2.25 billion richer after matching all six numbers in Tuesday night's draw - they just don't know it yet.

The four Florida tickets all matched the five winning numbers.

The winning ticket was sold at a convenience store in the rural town of Simpsonville, with a population 22,000.

Lottery officials in the southern state say a ticket that matched all six numbers of Tuesday's Mega Millions drawing was sold at the KC Mart shop in Simpsonville.

The magic numbers drawn Tuesday night were 5, 28, 62, 65, 70, and the Mega Ball was 5.

'The final total was less than the $1.6 billion estimate, ' confirmed Carol Gentry, a spokeswoman for the Maryland Lottery, which leads a consortium of state lotteries participating in the Mega Millions jackpot.

Some poker players did all they could to get their hands on a piece of the $1.6 billion jackpot. That still stands as the all-time highest lottery jackpot ever in the U.S.

Lottery officials have not announced the identities of a victor or winners.

States receive a percentage of lottery ticket sales and then use the money to support public schools or meet other needs.

Even if a lottery victor goes for annual payments and invests most of their take each year, the grand total would be less over the course of 30 years compared to the lump sum. Winners have up to 180 days to come forward to claim their money.

Didn't win anything from this Mega Millions?

Call it the world's largest lottery prize that wasn't. That's great for lottery sales but makes it more hard for officials to estimate how many irregular players will participate and how many tickets they'll buy, adding further complications to the jackpot estimate. Lotteries also give winners the option of taking one-time lump sum payment upfront, though the amount is always smaller; in the case of the $1.537 billion jackpot, the lump sum payment option comes to $878 million. Five years earlier, a Powerball player in the state won a US$399 million jackpot; the man who claimed that prize remained anonymous.
