Google Play 4K upgrade is an unexpected movie treat


Content from participating Hollywood studios such as Fox, Lionsgate, NBC Universal, Sony, and Warner Bros purchased in SD or HD quality will be available to stream in 4K as soon as that is available.

If you live in the USA or Canada and own some SD and HD quality films purchased from the Google Play Movies & TV app, your content will receive a free upgrade to 4K once such a version is available from the movie studio.

Product Manager of Google Play Movies & TV, says, "so you have more options to enjoy upgraded movies". If a 4K version of something you already own is made available, Google says, it'll automatically upgrade your version to that resolution.

This is all exciting news for anyone with a 4K TV.

As previously rumoured, Google is upgrading back catalogue films in your digital library to 4K versions. Just open up the Play Movies & TV app and you'll see an alert to let you know which titles have been upgraded.

The service is also lowering the prices of its 4K titles, but while it isn't selling them for the same price as HD films, as Apple is, there's not much in it.
