"I don't have anything set on where I want to go", Haley said, with the president at her side. "You can take your pick", Trump beamed at her.

President Donald Trump, however, insisted there was nothing to see here, pushing the narrative that Haley raised the idea with him six months ago, though TV news outlets reported she gave him a heads-up last week.

President Trump on Tuesday thanked outgoing UN Ambassador Nikki Haley for her service, calling her "someone who is very special to me" during a joint appearance at the White House after she announced her resignation.

"It has been the honor of a lifetime", Haley said. She also often sides even more strongly with Israel than Trump, who has pushed US policy away from its officially neutral stance on the conflict with the Palestinians.

But Haley, who is seen as stabilizing force within the Administration and a frequent spokesperson for the president's foreign policy on television, left on her own terms with her political credentials preserved.

"Looking at what we've done on the Middle East peace plan".

"There's no personal reason", she said, explaining her rationale for departing. "Jared is such a hidden genius that no one understands". He said that she had done a "fantastic job" and would leave at the end of the year.
