Fan Bingbing: missing Chinese actress emerges with £100m tax bill

Fan Bingbing attends the screening of "Ash Is The Purest White (Jiang Hu Er Nv)" during the 71st annual Cannes Film Festival at Palais des Festivals on May 11, 2018 in Cannes, France.

"Without the favorable polices of the Communist Party and state, without the love of the people, there would have been no Fan Bingbing", she added.

Tax authorities issued the 884 million yuan fine but said they would spare the 37-year-old - one of the highest-paid stars in her country - from criminal prosecution. She is one of five leading worldwide female actors cast in the forthcoming Hollywood spy thriller 355, alongside Jessica Chastain and Penelope Cruz.

According to a South China Morning Post report which quoted an unnamed source close to Ms Fan, the actress had been kept in a "holiday resort" used to investigate officials in a suburb in Jiangsu province.

As readers know, the Chinese actress was being investigated for large-scale tax evasion, and has been ordered to pay nearly $130 million.

Fan has not been seen in public since July 1st and had last posted on her personal Weibo account on June 2nd, one day before the State Administration of Taxation announced that it was opening up an investigation into her tax filings.

Detention would be an extraordinary undoing of the globe-trotting actress, who recently crossed over into American cinema with roles in X-Men: Days of Future Past and Ironman 3.

A report described unpaid taxes, fines and late fees amounting to almost 900 million yuan. She has a role in the upcoming Bruce Willis-Adrien Brody movie Air Strike. However, after the allegations of tax evasion emerged, Fan disappeared from social media on July 23 and has not been seen in public since. "I failed my country which nurtured me; I failed the society which trusted me; I failed the fans who liked me", she wrote to her 61 million followers.

Fan is known as China's highest-paid actor, with an income of 300 million yuan in 2017. In June, regulators capped star pay at 40 percent of a TV show's entire production budget and 70 percent of the total paid to all the actors in a film. For these violations, the Jiangsu Tax Bureau is fining Fan and her legal representative 880 million yuan.

Talk show host Cui Yongyuan had said in May that Fan had such an arrangement, which allegedly helps facilitate tax evasion, and revealed details that sparked a public outcry.
