Barbados on alert for Tropical Storm Kirk | Caribbean


Tropical storm warnings were in effect for Barbados, St. Lucia, Dominca, Martinique and Guadeloupe, and tropical storm watches were in place for St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It could regain sub-tropical storm status later this week.

A cyclone is a closed-circulation rotating storm that depending on its wind-speed intensity, is classified, from weakest to strongest, as a tropical depression, tropical storm or hurricane.

"Gradual weakening is anticipated during the next couple of days, but Kirk is forecast to move across the Lesser Antilles and into the eastern Caribbean Sea as a tropical storm, " the hurricane center said.

Tropical Storm Kirk was 415 miles east of Barbados and about 535 miles east-southeast of Martinique. In the National Hurricane Center's 8am bulletin the storm was headed towards the northern Windward Islands and expected to approach Barbados tomorrow.

"However, outer rain bands from the system may create unstable conditions", the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) said, noting that winds of 10 to 20 miles per hour with higher gusts are "possible".

A Tropical Storm Warning is issued when Tropical Storm conditions, including winds of 39-73 mph, are EXPECTED in a specified coastal area within 36 hours or less. These rains may produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.
